Septic Tanks And Your Pets!

Do you have dogs and cats in the home? Did you know they could be having an impact on your septic tank? Septic tanks require certain maintenance strategies, all of which are unique to each septic tank. From water usage to eating habits, occupants in the home and the presence of our favourite four legged friends; all have a huge impact on how your septic tank should be maintained. To show you how Rover or Felix could affect your septic system, check out our list below!

Top Tips For Happy Pets & Healthy Septic Systems

Cat Waste – How many of you deposit cat waste from the litter box down the toilet? There are two reasons why this is a bad idea. Cat waste that’s sat in a litter box for an extended period becomes petrified. This can lead to clogs in your pipes. It’s also worth noting that cat litter itself can also cause problems. From clogging the system to chemical releases, cat litter is a real issue. Add to this the possibility that the cat waste you’re putting into your septic system could be filled with parasites and the potential for problems becomes even bigger. Between health hazards to you and damage to your septic system, it’s best to avoid cat waste down your toilet completely.

Pet Hair and Septic Tanks

Pet Hair – Whether you give your dog a shower in your bathroom or you have a cat that loves sitting in a sink, pet hair causes problems. Both can lead to a build up of hair in your drains. This can and will cause blockages. There are easy ways to stop this however, with stoppers in drains to collect the hair before it goes further into your plumbing.

Digging Dogs – Every dog has done it at some point. Digging is almost a right of passage. Doing it near your pipes and tank however, could spell big problems. Accidental damage is the main concern. Even if Fido fails to damage the pipes directly, leaving parts exposed to the elements could indirectly cause difficulties down the line. If your dog is a digger, make sure you keep them away from the area where your septic tank’s located.

Chemicals and Septic Tanks Do Not Mix!

Chemical Products – It’s advisable to avoid chemicals entering your septic system. Pet products in particular can contain a myriad of chemicals. Think flea and tick products to wormers as well as pet shampoos and supplements. Allowing chemicals to enter your system will offset the balance of bacteria. This will affect its ability to break down waste efficiently causing disruption. Even pet wipes marked as flushable should be put into the bin and not down your toilet.
