Whether you’re having an extension added to your property or even a loft converted, having a new addition to your home can be exciting but without the help of a good builder, it can all too easily become a complete nightmare. Thankfully, here at euroloo, we’re often in the company of builders and decided to share a little knowledge we were lucky enough to be in receipt of! So here are a few things your builder wishes you knew, starting with that all important portable toilet.
Hire a portable toilet – it’s something you hear about from your neighbours, read about on forums or realise when you don’t have one but a portable toilet sited outside of your property when undergoing a home extension/building work is a must-have. This cannot be emphasised enough. Just as you won’t want builders walking in and out of your home in dusty work boots, using your family’s toilet all day long, trust us when we say that builders are just as uncomfortable with it. Hiring a portable toilet to be sited close to the works or outside of your property is the perfect solution. Not only will your family’s toilet remain clean and private, but your builders will feel comfortable using their own facilities and we’d like to add, remain super efficient with the availability of their own sanitation facilities.
Do your homework when looking for a builder – social media has taken the world by storm. Not only are long lost friends and relatives finally making contact but people are buying and selling products and services via social media platforms more than ever before – and that includes building services. It’s now all too easy to find a “professional company” with a few search words typed into Facebook or Twitter, however, the experienced builders want you to know that it’s also all too easy to become duped too by “cowboy builders” claiming to be something they aren’t. Professional builders can be found using trusted sites such as checkatrade.com or better still, word of mouth. Has a friend or relative recently undergone building work at home? Would they recommend the company? Then ask for the contact details. This means not only getting the recommendation of a trusted contact but you may also get to see the work carried out too. Be smart and do your homework when it comes to the building company and a nightmare will so easily be avoided.
Find a project manager for your self-build – employing a project manager could be the best decision you ever make. You could of course do it yourself but if you lack experience within the field, then it could become a minefield. Organising bricklayers, electricians, plumbers and more is a difficult task and will only add to the stress for you and your builder. Find yourself a project manager with experience and hey presto…smooth sailing for you and your builders.
