One in five SME’s offer sub-standard toilets

Quality portable toilet hire for your team!!

Would you be surprised to learn that one in five small businesses have toilets labeled “sub-standard”? As surprising as it may be, recent research has actually shown that a great number of British businesses are failing to meet a minimum standard when it comes to their office toilets, leaving their employees with not only sub-standard facilities but long waits for each cubicle too.

The study was conducted by Initial Washroom Hygiene and found a whopping one in five small businesses were falling short of their legal requirements. More than half of all staff and businesses surveyed said that they’d regularly had to wait around in order to use the toilet facilities within their office which resulted in them wasting an average of around seven minutes each and every week, totaling on average, five hours per staff member every single year. What’s more, one fifth of small business employees (around 19%) aren’t happy with the standard of the washroom facilities within their work environment and another two fifths (approx. 39%) say their surfaces are unclean too.

Lost productivity however, isn’t the only implication of sub-standard toilets. Almost one in three office workers admit that sub-standard toilets are costing employers by hitting staff morale as well as raising comments from clients too about the state of their washrooms with 3% having actually lost business due to the state of their poor toilets.

On top of this, employment happens to be at its highest since 2006 with office space at its lowest rate in 14 years. This means employers are then being forced to squeeze more and more people into smaller spaces and as a result, toilet facilities are struggling under the pressure. The race for space as it’s known also happens to increase at certain levels and sectors too. From the 2,015 small business employees interviewed, the longest queuing time was actually discovered amongst the IT, telecommunications and financial sectors with wait times averaging around 9.8 and 9.1 minutes per week. Waiting times aside, it would appear that toilets within the food and agricultural industries are the worst for giving clients and potential customers rather negative impressions. Roughly 16% of respondents have reported that their toilets and washroom facilities have received some seriously bad press in the past.

When it comes to the Health and Safety Executive Guidelines from the Workplace Regulations of 1992, regulations state that the number of toilets provided by small businesses for employees must increase along with the number of employees. A small business with five employees must have at least two toilets available increasing to a minimum of five toilets for businesses with seventy six to one hundred employees. With more than one in five small business workers claiming their employers don’t meet the required minimum, it makes for shocking statistics to show so many companies actually breaking the law. HSE guidelines also require employers to keep their washrooms in what’s known as a clean and orderly state, however 19% of these employees said it simply wasn’t the case in their workplace.

Now while this may sound not only complicated in terms of calculating staff, space and number of toilets, it can also sound a little costly too. Thankfully, we’re here to tell you it’s not.
