While the number of pensioners living in poverty has indeed fallen over the last ten years, there are still a whopping 1.6 million pensioners still experiencing poverty. To really bring it to your attention, just take a look at the following stats:
- One in seven pensioners are living in poverty, defined as having incomes of less than 60% of the median income after housing costs.
- 2 million pensioners have incomes just above the poverty line.
- Low income in retirement is linked to earlier low pay or a time out of employment due to caregiver responsibilities, maternity or even disability.
- Women are more likely to be in poverty than men as well as single pensioners.
Given the sheer amount of poverty being suffered by so many OAP’s in this country, it’s even more surprising that so many are missing out on entitlements and we’re not talking about a few thousand pounds. The Government recently estimated that between 2014-2015, £3.5 billion of low income benefits went unclaimed. That’s a lot of utility bills that could have been paid. This is undoubtedly due to a combination of reasons, including a complete lack of knowledge and a total assumption that they simply aren’t entitled to anything.
Thankfully, fantastic organisations such as Age UK are putting efforts toward halving pensioner poverty by doing what they can to ensure all those deserving support are receiving it.
