As a company recognised and utilised nationwide, it should come as no surprise that we’ve seen the building and construction industry change over the years. One of the biggest changes to take place is no doubt the nationality of the builders working within the industry. Over the last ten years, Britain has seen a great benefit from the Eastern European immigration as it’s made home improvements a lot cheaper and subsequently a lot more accessible for people too. We’re not the only people that have noticed either. John Carter, the chief executive of Travis Perkins has said the influx of such skilled workmen introduced some serious competition to the market and as such, a “Do it for me” culture was created as opposed to the “Do it yourself” culture we were used to.
One of the things we’ve found most interesting is probably the different terms used for the toilet itself. When dealing with Eastern European customers, we now know that portable toilets are referred to as Toi Toi. It’s now become common practice so much so that our team use that very term when dealing with Eastern European customers themselves. From this, we began to wonder just what other nationalities use to refer to portable toilets. From Letrinas in Spain, to Tragbare Toilettes in Germany, there are a great number of different ways to say it but none so recognisable it would seem, as Toi Toi, a term that’s recognised all throughout Europe. We’ve become so used to using the term in fact that we’ve even been known to use it when dealing with non-Eastern European clients, much to their confusion.
Having now gained a few close working relationships with a number of Eastern European builders and constructions site managers, we’ve also now discovered a major player within the portable toilet hire industry in Europe called Toi Toi & Dixi. With over 70 branches and service stations located all around Germany, they’re big business when it comes to toi toi hire in the rest of Europe.
With a rise in Eastern European workers here in the UK of approximately 23% in 2015 alone, and more set to arrive in 2016, we can safely say we’ll be working alongside more Eastern European workers in the future for all things Toi Toi and we couldn’t be more excited to see what other terminology they bring to the industry that we can adopt for ourselves.
