Quinn London – Sustainable Off-Grid Sanitation with the Solar Toilet Trailer 2+2

Providing reliable on-site welfare facilities is crucial for maintaining workforce wellbeing and efficiency. Traditional diesel-powered welfare units incurred high running costs and contributed to carbon emissions, which conflicted with Quinn London’s sustainability commitments.

Introduction

Quinn London, a leading principal contractor specialising in high-quality construction, refurbishment and heritage restoration projects across London and the South East, required suitable toilet facilities to support its team at the Maidstone, Kent site. The location presented a particular challenge because it was entirely off-grid; mains power and water connections were completely unavailable during the initial phases of development and permanent facilities had not yet been established.

The customer needed a dependable, self-contained solution that could be delivered directly to the remote site while providing a high standard of sanitation, proper handwashing facilities and everyday comfort for the workforce.

The Requirement

The facilities needed to operate effectively without relying on mains power, mains water or permanent drainage, while also avoiding the need for a noisy diesel generator during normal operation to ensure the site could run quietly and efficiently. To maintain a high standard of health and safety, the unit required fresh-water flushing toilets alongside an instant supply of hot water for proper handwashing, making it crucial that the equipment could be delivered and positioned easily without requiring any permanent groundwork.

The Solution

We supplied a Solar Toilet Trailer 2+2 unit to Lenham Heath, Maidstone, featuring four individual cubicles equipped with fresh-water flushing and instant hot handwashing. Powered entirely by an integrated solar and battery system, the unit eliminated the need for generators or fuel, utilising a 210-litre fresh-water tank and a 460-litre waste tank to operate completely off-grid. The towable trailer was delivered directly to the site, where its electric hydraulic system quickly lowered and stabilised it into a secure, static installation for the duration of the hire.

The Conclusion

  • Generator-free operation: Zero fuel was required to operate the unit, significantly lowering the project’s carbon footprint.
  • Improved site sanitation: Fresh-water flushing and instant hot handwashing provided a premium standard of hygiene and comfort.
  • Quiet operation: The solar power and battery storage system operated completely silently, eliminating noisy generator disruptions.
  • Off-grid capability: On-board water and waste storage allowed the unit to maintain full operational efficiency.
