Introduction
The Colchester Archaeological Trust is dedicated to uncovering and preserving the rich historical heritage of Colchester and its surrounding areas. With excavation projects often taking place in remote or sensitive locations, providing welfare facilities that align with their commitment to sustainability and staff wellbeing was essential. They needed an eco-friendly welfare solution that would support their field teams while minimising environmental impact.

The Requirement
Archaeological digs require on-site welfare facilities to ensure the comfort and efficiency of teams working in demanding conditions. Traditional diesel-powered units were not only costly but also contradicted the trust’s environmental values. The Colchester Archaeological Trust sought a reliable and sustainable alternative that could provide sanitation, a canteen area and a drying room while significantly reducing emissions.
The Solution
To address these needs, the Colchester Archaeological Trust partnered with ecowelfare to install a 12ft fully solar-powered welfare unit. The unit featured a canteen where staff could take breaks and prepare meals, a single toilet for essential sanitation and a drying room for storing and drying wet gear. By utilising solar power, this welfare unit provided a cost-effective, low-impact solution that met the trust’s operational and environmental goals.
The Conclusion
- Zero fuel costs – Fully solar-powered, eliminating reliance on diesel.
- Over 59 litres of fuel saved – Reducing operational expenses and environmental impact.
- More than 187kg of CO2 emissions avoided – Supporting the Colchester Archaeological Trust’s commitment to sustainability.
- Improved workforce welfare – Providing comfortable, well-equipped spaces tailored to different site needs.
