Weird and wonderful things in our portable toilets

Weird and wonderful things in our portable toilets

It’s fair to say that in absolutely any line of work, there will often be an occurrence of something surprising. Something that’ll really make you raise an eyebrow or god forbid, gasp in astonishment. In the world of euroloo however, these sorts of occurrences tend to happen on quite a regular basis and the occurrences we’re referring to here are the unusual items that can often be found down our portable toilets on collection. If you were to ask a member of the general public just what we might find on a regular basis, the majority of them would reply with keys or perhaps even a mobile phone. Sadly, this doesn’t even come close as was very well explained in a recent article in the Southampton Daily Echo.

The article in question, titled, “Sex toys and false teeth flushed down toilets” focused on home loos as opposed to our portable toilets however it needn’t have explained further. As the titled suggested, there were many weird and wonderful things found down the odd u-bend on a regular occasion. While some were quite funny, in particular, adult toys and false teeth, others were far more sinister such as the deceased pets. One can only hope the deceased pets in question were merely the lifeless bodies of goldfish making their final swim to the sea in the sky. Never the less, it does create some rather alarming figures and also give us here at euroloo quite a well educated idea as to why so many people suffer with blocked toilets in their home.

Southern water recently released figures showing that there were more than 7000 sewer blockages caused as a direct result of people flushing tons of rubbish down their home loos. These tons were now making their way into the thousands and sadly it looks to continue. Whether these occurrences were intentional or not remain to be seen but what is known is the fact that 1934.81 tons of rag (industry terminology for inappropriate items causing blockages) is now beginning to cause rather large headaches for the customers themselves.

It may surprise you however to learn that in some cases, it is just a matter of education, or lack there of. While many realise there are just a few things that can be flushed down the toilet, others believe if it flushes away, then it’s safe but this just isn’t the case. In the Daily Echo article, a sewer workman, Stuart Slark made this comment, “The only things that should be flushed down the toilet are the three Ps – pee, poo and paper. For everything else, bag it and bin it. It costs our customers £1.8million a year to have this removed and keep our sewers flowing.”

Without wanting to state the obvious, our sewer systems were made to remove our excrement. The reason toilet paper can also be flushed is simply down to the fact that it decomposes naturally making it perfectly safe to flush away. Other items however, such as false teeth, teddy bears and even the supposedly safe wet wipes, are strictly for bins only. If you’d like more info regarding your sewer system or if you think you may have a blockage and would like some advice with regards to solving the issue, please do contact us on 0800 61 22 515. Failing yet, just hire our quality portable toilets safe in the knowledge they’re highly unlikely to become blocked.
