With baited breath we sat, open-mouthed as we watched Fury throw punch after punch to victory. Yes we had his back, yes he was the man we pinned our money but we didn’t think it would be as easy as he made it look. Tyson Fury’s world title victory over Wladimir Klitschko has been deemed one of the greatest defeats since Ali beat Liston in 1964 and we couldn’t agree more.
Fury, 27, outpointed Klitschko to become the IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight champion of the world and we couldn’t think of anyone more deserving. The fighter from Manchester claimed victory over the Ukrainian wasn’t a shock for him but it certainly was for the rest of the world. Fury’s trainer and uncle Peter Fury believes Tyson has shaken the world just like Ali did in his world famous battle of 64’ and it would seem that’s certainly the case considering everyone’s shock at Saturday nights result. Peter Fury also had this to say, “Tyson will be in boxing a long time and will cement his legacy. He is going to enjoy his reign at the top. It’s been a hard road but now he has landed at the top of the hill.”
Despite Klitschko’s past success having won 65 of his 68 professional fights, unbeaten since 2004, he was easily out-boxed over 12 rounds by Fury. Fury was awarded the fight via unanimous voting and is now Britain’s 5th heavyweight world champion, a title not to be sniffed at, joining the likes of Bob Fitzsimmons, Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno.
In true Fury style, he claimed he wasn’t surprised, nor overwhelmed having always said he’d do it one day. What possibly made it an even bigger victory for Fury was the fact that he beat Klitschko on his own turf, acting (as he described) very much like a, “mongoose going into a cobra’s nest, taking all the eggs home with me.”
In true Fury style, he began taunting his opponent before the fight, even appearing dressed as Batman at one particular news conference. Despite the exciting run up however, there were actually a few late doubts as to whether the fight would be going ahead after Fury and his camp complained about the thickness of the foam underneath the canvas of the ring which led it to be torn up and re-laid just in the nick of time.
So is that it for the two heavyweights? Fury doesn’t seem to think so after he quite openly declared his happiness to let Klitschko attempt to win his belts back, “that’s if Klitschko fancies his chances again” Fury hastened to add. The reason behind his calm attitude toward a rematch might have something to do with the fact that he expected the 39-year-old Ukrainian to be a lot stronger than he was. Could this become Fury’s first defence of this newly acquired three world belts? Peter Fury seems to think so, even suggesting on the Sunday following the fight that Wembley, May 2016 could be a possibility. For the time being it’s a case of watch this space but whatever happens, we’ll most certainly be behind the fury that is Tyson who has given us as boxing fans a fabulous ride over the past 5 years.
