Getting Your Septic Tank Ready For Winter

Maintaining a septic tank is a year round job. Maintenance in the winter however, is a little trickier. As winter is approaching, it’s a great time to get things in order. Ensure your tank is in fine condition before the colder weather sets in and avoid any costly maintenance and repair work in the middle of winter itself. To make it easier, check out our list below offering our top tips for getting your septic tank ready for winter. From faint rotten egg smells on warm days to puddles around your drain field, we’ve got you covered.

Septic Tanks This Winter

Pump Your Tank – like most, we’re guessing it’s been a while since your last tank pump. If this is the case, autumn is always a good time to do it. If you leave it until winter, you’ll find your tank difficult to access in the frost. Worse still, you’ll find it impossible to find in the snow. For these reasons, we advise pumping your septic tank before winter sets in.

Ensure Leaks Are Fixed – if your taps or plumbing suffers from leaks, it’s time to get them fixed now. Dripping taps can lead to frozen pipes, which can in turn, lead to cracked pipes. You might also want to check out your tanks lid. If liquids and cold temperatures can seep their way in, your septic tank and the system may find itself freezing.

Start Conserving Water – this tip might seem like a bit of a drag but it’s for the health of your septic system. Events such as Christmas can mean a huge strain on your septic tank. Extra guests over the holiday season may be something your tank hasn’t been prepared for. It’s important to practice some sort of water conservation. This will help to avoid overworking the tank when you’ll need it most.

Grow Your Grass And Spread The Mulch

Grow Out Grass – growing an extra few inches of grass above your septic tank helps hugely. It increases insulation, reducing the chance of your system freezing. It’s amazing what an extra few inches of grass can do.

Spread Some Mulch – another great way to insulate your septic tank is to spread mulch across the area where your septic tank lay. Consider at least a few inches thick. This is best done now before the freezing weather sets in, making it much harder and leaving your septic tank vulnerable.
