Health and Safety Hazards in Construction

According to the Health & Safety Executive, there are around 80,000 different construction workers within the UK that find themselves suffering poor health each and every year. 64,000 of these are classified as non-fatal injuries. Statistics such as this, prove one thing – accidents are an every day occurrence within the construction industry. While these accidents can’t always be prevented, due to plain and simple human error, the risk can be minimised. So what are the biggest risks within the construction industry to date?

Biggest Risks Within The Construction Industry

• Asbestos – this is one of the main sources of fatal respiratory conditions. Asbestos lung-cancer causes a staggering 20% of overall deaths from lung disease. According to the latest figures, around 50,000 buildings still contain asbestos. From ceilings to thermal paper and even wall plaster, these are all areas that need careful consideration when working with them, to avoid exposure.
• Airborne Fibres And Toxins – breathing in dust from stone masonry and woodwork, as well as toxic fibres can all lead to lung problems later on down the line. Think of anything from occupational asthma to chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder. Lung cancer can even develop later on down the line.
• Manual Handling – manual handling, from heavy lifting to pushing and pulling materials can all lead to problems if not carried out correctly. Think soft tissue damage affecting everything from the neck to the shoulders, elbows, arms and even the hands. It could also affect the back, hips, legs and even your ankles and feet. By continuing with such heavy lifting in the incorrect manner, workers will find them worsening over time and in some cases, even leading to permanent disability.
• Noise – hazardous noises can be a very serious problem for construction sites. With some workers being somewhat lax with their hearing protection, it’s a very common problem. Protective gear is an absolute must although sadly not worn often enough.
• HAVS – HAVS stands for hand and vibration syndrome. This is associated with those who continually use a handheld power tool. Over time, HAVS can develop causing permanent damage. It is easily preventable however, with the help of regular breaks and ensuring hands remain warm.
• Working From Height – this is one of the major causes of fatality in the construction industry. Between 2016-2017, 50% of fatalities were caused by working from height.

This list isn’t exhaustive but it certainly highlights some of the biggest dangers when working within the construction industry. The HSE website has a great deal of advice should you need any and of course, here at euroloo, we’re always on hand to offer advice relating to sanitation in the workplace. For more information on portable toilet hire for construction sites, simply contact us today. While our builders loos may not help with regards to working from height or HAVS, they can help keep germs and bacteria at bay and offer your workers the comfort they need and deserve.
